Interview with the designer
Tell us about what you do and what you specialize in. Most of my time is spent in my studio. I hand carve, cast and fabricate my jewelry line - primarily in sterling silver. My approach to my process is to create small wearable sculptures meant to punctuate a persons style and become a part of their everyday. I love making big rings that stand out on peoples hands and sometimes stretch the boundaries of what is wearable. How did you get involved in designing jewelry? My grandma always told me I should do something where I worked with my hands…turns out she was right! When I was younger I would turn found objects into wearable pieces – I've always felt that things became special if they could be worn and kept close to you. When I was in high school I was kicked out of my metalwork class for making rings instead of the assigned project. It wasn’t until much later (and kind of on a whim) that I signed up for an evening silversmith class…I was hooked right away and applied for a full time program at VCC. There is something really amazing to me about using these ancient techniques that have been passed down for thousands of years to create pieces that are current and kind of mark this decade. What makes today special for you? Today is really just an average day for me…but I guess that’s really what makes it special. I feel incredibly fortunate that this is what I get to spend my days doing, and it’s really something special when I think that every day there are people out there wearing something that I created!
